Poker is a card game in which players wager chips (representing money) and compete to make the best five-card hand. Each hand has a value in inverse proportion to its mathematical frequency; the more unusual the combination, the higher the rank. The game is played with incomplete information (the players do not know each other’s cards) and involves bluffing.

Depending on the rules of the game, one player has the privilege or obligation to place an initial amount in the pot before any cards are dealt; this is known as placing an ante. After this, the cards are dealt. Initially, each player has 2 cards which are hidden from the other players; these are called their hole or pocket cards. In some games, a 3rd card is dealt face-up to the table and revealed to all players; this is known as the flop.

After the flop, another betting phase begins. At this point, a player can decide to fold his or her cards and concede the hand, call the current bet (either the same as the last bet or a raise), or raise the bet themselves.

Experienced players are often able to spot other players’ betting patterns; conservative players tend to fold their cards early, while aggressive players can be bluffed into raising their bets too high. The player with the best hand wins all of the bets placed so far; this is known as winning the pot. Depending on the game, there may be rules in place for how this money is shared amongst the remaining players.
