A toggle is a switch that can be set to either on or off. It is found in many devices and software applications. Toggle is also a verb, meaning to switch back and forth between settings or programs. For example, a user might toggle between Microsoft Excel and the Windows calculator while working.
The visibility toggle feature allows you to hide sections and items from viewers. The only people who can see hidden content are the article owner and any users who have the toggle enabled for that section or item. To use the toggle, hover your mouse over a section or item in the presentation view of an article. An eye icon will appear, indicating that the section or item is toggled. Clicking it again will disable the toggle and make that section or item visible again. This toggle feature works only on articles created using the template and not on custom worlds or existing worlds.
There are a few technical limitations to the visibility toggle. You cannot toggle secrets or subscriber containers, and some sections such as the article title, credits, and the article vignette are not eligible to be toggled. Additionally, if the toggled item contains a mention link to another article, it will not function properly. Dynamic content such as spoilers that load later may also break the visibility toggle.
Toggles need to be easy to understand and use, especially for users with disabilities. Designers often create visual cues such as animations or color changes to make the toggle easily recognizable and action oriented. However, these features can be confusing and even a little frustrating for users who don’t see the toggle clearly or have red/green color blindness.
