A toggle is a switch that can be flipped to change between two states or modes. Toggle switches are common in technology, computing, programming, and communication systems to allow users to change settings or modes at will.
Feature toggles are useful in continuous development because they allow your team to test new features with segments of your audience before full rollout. They can also act as circuit breakers in your application to prevent outages during high latency periods.
When designing toggles, ensure they look like sliders and use visual cues to convey their state — such as color changes or animations. Make sure that your toggles follow WCAG guidelines for accessibility, and that your labeling is descriptive so that users understand what the toggle will do when it’s in its default ON state. Also be careful not to over-use toggles for settings that should be automatically enabled, such as cookies or location services.
Toggles are available to Grandmaster subscribers and above. Toggle visibility of article sections and items, containers (like quote boxes), images, maps, key/value items, prompt linked articles, and diplomacy relations. Note: Some dynamic content may not be toggable. Toggles are not applicable to the title of an article or credits.
