Poker is a card game that combines skill and luck in order to win. It can be played in either cash games or tournaments, but the same strategies apply across both formats. In this article, Ryan Fee explains four common situations where boosting your aggression will boost your win rate.

In poker, players compete against each other by betting on the strength of their hands. There are a number of ways to increase your chances of winning a hand, including bluffing and using tells. However, the key to a successful poker strategy is knowing how strong your hand is and knowing when to call or fold.

During each hand, players place mandatory bets called blinds into the pot before being dealt 2 cards. After the first round of betting, a flop is dealt. This is followed by another round of betting. If a player wants to stay in the pot they must raise the amount of money they have staked, or else they can fold.

After the flop, 1 more card is dealt, which is called the turn. A final round of betting takes place, again starting with the player to the left of the dealer. During this round, any player who has a pair or better can bet and the highest hand wins the pot.

Before the river, if you have a strong hand and think your opponent may fold, you can check (bet without raising) to make sure that they don’t. This will force weaker hands to bet and may improve your chances of winning.
